Set about 40 years prior to the start of the Mouse Guard series, The Black Axe is about how Celanawe sought and found the legendary Black Axe. The story starts out as Celanawe getting a visit from Em, his last living relative. Em comes with a missive from the Matriarch of the Mouse Guard, to help Em recover the lost Black Axe. Em states the axe was last in possession of her brother, and they must travel overseas farther than anyone has before to find him.

Em and Celanawe manages to find the one mouse willing to take them on such a voyage and their perilous adventure truly begins.

This is one of the best stories I have ever read. I was engrossed from the first panel to the very last. I felt what the characters were feeling and was totally lost in this adventure, which was very grim indeed, but never without hope. I loved and appreciated the simplicity and complexity of everything -- the writing and the art. The only part that I felt detracted from the story was the difficulty in reading of some of the text, it took a while for me to recognize the strangely drawn letters, however appropriate the design was to the medieval-like setting.

A strong graphic novel in so many ways and highly recommended for anyone.
