Charlie is a teenager just starting the freshman year of high school. Charlie is shy and nervous and has trouble making friends or fitting into a group until he meets two seniors, Sam and her stepbrother Patrick.

Sam and Patrick are outsiders themselves, but have a tight group of their own that now includes Charlie. Through their friendship, Charlie learns Patrick is gay and secretly dating a jock. Sam and Patrick learn that Charlie's best friend committed suicide the year before and that he went through a stint at a mental hospital. There are the usual high school hijinks of drugs, dangers, and dating.

I can't quite say I enjoyed Perks of being a Wallflower, although I found it to be an above average teen angst movie. It felt like the characters were all on edge some, somehow, and that put me on edge. There wasn't a point where I felt I could simply relax and enjoy what I'm seeing, but suffering the pain of being a teenager in high school.

I do like how the characters handled the pitfalls of dating, homophobia, and struggling to be above needing to fit in anywhere. I also liked how there were able to support each other, despite some of the infighting they go through. It all felt genuine and relatively upbeat, despite some of the dark things that happen.
