ISBN: 978-1-4215-6004-5 Grade: 6 Raku and Chitoge are from rival gangster families and forced to "love" each other to keep the peace. They are also searching for their childhood loves. Raku and Chitoge's closest friends now know the love is fake, but things stay complicated. Kosaki is unable to tell Raku how she feels. Raku saves Chitoge, and Seishiro transfers to the school to test Raku and protect Chitoge. These circumstances bring Raku and Chitoge closer despite themselves.
This is an enjoyable volume. It's not particularly engaging or memorable, but it's enjoyable. The rival families aspect isn't something new, nor is the childhood promise (with token to help recognize each other). The art is very well done with great character designs. Again, not anything overly special, but pleasing to the eye. The page layouts and actions of the characters help make this a great read.
I love how Chitoge and Raku are perfect for each other, and that that keeps getting reinforced. Kosaki is nice and pretty cute (though not as good looking as Chitoge); her best friend is less attractive, which makes her seem better by comparison. While I get that Raku thinks he wants a more "sweet" girl, but Kosaki really doesn't have anything going for her (yet she's the girl that all the boys like). I like that Raku gets to see some other sides to Chitoge and begins to appreciate her more. She's the most complex (and thus, interesting) character, and I look forward to seeing how she develops through the story. It's interesting that she has to hide the truth about her family, but Raku doesn't. Seishiro shakes things up, but I don't really like the inclusion. It's a character that comes off as more than a little crazy, and things get more complicated right at the end (which makes me wonder how well Chitoge knows Seishiro).
While not the most original story, it is well done with excellent art and a few interesting characters. If you're just looking for a fun little shojo, it's a fine one to pick up. If you're looking for your next favorite series, don't make up your mind yet; it's only volume two.
