A powerful force transports the Fairy Tail guild and their whole town to a world called Edolas, where magi is in short supply and those in power plan to suck the magic out of the people they've stolen. A few are left behind, and they make their way to this world to rescue their friends, but things come to light that prevent them from trusting each other. Plus, there are Edolas doubles of all the characters, with personalities mostly opposite the ones we're used to! Happy and Carla learn the truth about themselves as well.

The DVD set starts out with some filler episodes that are rather boring actually. The upside is that we start to see that Natsu may have some feelings for Lucy. I didn't see this twist coming. I was wondering where the story was going to go after the last giant battle, and a parallel world with opposites of everyone and a lack of magic is certainly unexpected. I wasn't sure I liked the new world at first. It's a bit trite and unimaginative. However, the Exceed (that's what the flying cats are called) aspect of the plot provides some uniqueness while also giving more purpose to Happy and Carla. I really, really like how their part of the story is handled. The other aspect that keeps it interesting (although, less so) is the lack of inherent magic and the use of magically enhanced tools. It comes off like a bad swords-and-sorcery video game, bringing some humor (sometimes forced humor) to the story. It's strange that not all the duplicates are opposite, and I don't understand why that is. Erza and Gajeel are two important examples of characters that are only slightly different than normal -- mainly their occupation and the lack of magic. I am curious why a certain character was brought back from the dead and if that will have an actual impact on the plot.

This is not the most exciting arc, but I like the characters and am still enjoying the story. I like that Happy and Carla get to shine with more backstory as well. I love that Lucy takes on strong roles in both versions of herself. I would like to think that our Lucy still has her powers because of the type of magic she uses, but it's probably more to do with the mysterious thing she ate before coming to Edolas. I miss seeing Natsu's dragon-fire attacks, but maybe we'll get to see more from Gajeel. We don't get to know most of the characters in this new world, so it's hard to get very invested. However, I am still curious how things will be resolved. I'm also curious how Gajeel will fit in with the rescue as he's doing his own thing, with a little help from his other self. While I'm not ovely impressed with this new direction in the storyline, I'm glad I watched it so that I don't have questions about the plot as I continue forward.
