Rainbow Rocks takes us back to Canterlot High, the human equivalent of the My Little Pony universe. A trio of mean girls, called Sirens, arrive at Canterlot High and become a band called the Dazzlings. They plan to use the power of their singing to enslave the student population and cause strife, feeding off the negative energy to become more powerful.

Reformed villain, Sunset Shimmer, discovers their plot, and manages to contact Twilight Sparkle from Equestria. They need Twilight's spell-writing skills to create a musical counter-spell to the Dazzlings' Siren song, to be played by the Equestria Girl's band: The Rainbooms. Not surprisingly, there are obstacles in the way to defeating the Dazzlings.

This was a fun second entry into the Equestria Girls universe, and the candy-colored animation and sparkly characters do not hide that there is real warmth and depth to the characters, particularly Sunset Shimmer. She stood out above all the others and that made the movie particularly enjoyable.

All the rest of the ponies / girls were exactly as you expect them, although they amped up the obnoxious egotism of Rainbow Dash a little too much. Twilight Sparkle was almost the weakest link here, but I did appreciate that they clearly showed that she and Sunset Shimmer face similar difficulties and, despite being once enemies, how friendship can transform people.

The sequel didn't feel as fresh and novel as in the first, and the musical numbers aren't up to the same level, but this is nevertheless a fine entry to the MLP universe, although it may not be the best vehicle to introduce newcomers to the MLP franchise.
