This volume is nice in that it shows us a little of how the Cristiano Family operates and their relation to Twilights. It adds a deeper dimension to the story, though I still feel like I'm scratching the surface. Despite her young age, Loretta is not afraid to do her job as head of the Cristiano Family. Of course, it helps that she has two really strong bodyguards. The hunters that show up provide a good excuse for us to see the bodyguards in action. It's an impressive battle, and we also learn more about Nic's skills and how he compares to other Twilights. In fact, power levels of various characters get put into perspective in this volume, and I'm very curious about the hunters. Are they Twilights as well? Are they human? Are they on a special drug? How are they so fast and strong? Things get even more interesting when we see siblings separated on either side of the conflict. That, along with many other details, are left vague and open ended to be answered later.
Much of this volume's focus is on Alex. Her brother is brought into the mix as old memories begin to surface now that the effects of the drug she was on as a prostitute are wearing off. He's brought further into the story in another way, but that is left as a twist for the next volume. I appreciate that she still struggles with her past, and the Handymen are trying to help her move past it. I like how she takes on an odd job of searching for a missing cat, and how Nic helps her without totally overshadowing her efforts. I love some of his gentleness with how he relates to her. I also like how Worick sets things up for Alex to get a new job (not working for them), taking a different spin on the option provided given her skill sets.
This story is heavy and full of conflict. There's political struggles as well as physical ones, and a class system that's used and abused and full of fear and misunderstanding. I don't have any idea where the story is headed at this point, but it's an interesting delve into this world.
