The issue opens with man telling his daughter, a young girl named Raven, about her great grandmother, a famous pirate. After tucking his daughter in bed, we switch to Raven, now a young woman and trapped in a tower. In flies Bedelia and Adrienne to the rescue! They handily rescue Raven and discover she is the well-known pirate, the Black Arrow. Bedelia is star-struck and they all go out to celebrate. However, Raven is bent on revenge against those who stuck her in the tower and starts picking more of a fight than she can handle.

This is a nifty first issue. I loved the first couple of pages of Raven listening to her grandmother's story and that her father wants her to be a warrior not a helpless princess. I also laughed at the slap-stick antics of Bedelia, Adrienne, and Raven escaping a gang of pirate thugs.

On the downside, the rescue itself was rather pedestrian, with the trio of girls easily beating yet another bunch of misogynistic knights. I'm all for Girl Power, but it felt a bit been there, done that kind of vibe.

On the upside, though, I did like the potential of Raven, who seems to match up with the girls quite well, but who also has an agenda of her own that will obviously conflict with Adrienne's quest to rescue her sisters. That should be interesting to see in future issues.
