The framework for this issue of Mouse Guard is a simple one. Innkeeper June offers the waiving of the debt to one guest who tells her the best story. Three take her up on her offer.

"The Gosling and the Ghost" is about a Guard mouse helping a millworker prevent a goose from perpetually robbing his grain store.

"The Mouse and the Moon" is about a young mouse asking his father what the moon is made of. The father teaches him how to discover for himself.

"The Armor Maker" is about a young smith, renowned for his skill in making armor, who dreams of wearing the armor himself.

Overall, I felt this first issue of a limited run to be a bit underwhelming. The concept of folks being invited to tell their tale is a old one. The stories themselves are nice, but not particularly noteworthy stories in their own right.

"The Mouse and the Moon" is the funniest, but slightest of the three both in writing and in art. "The Gosling and the Ghost" has a cute solution to the problem of the goose, but that's about it.

"The Armor Maker" is the best out of the three, with an appealing, sympathetic character, a strong emotional arc, and good artwork.

Despite the strength of the last story, I can't entirely recommend getting this as a single issue, but it would make for a very good collection.
