Credits ISBN: 1600106617 Writer: Steve Niles Penciler: Bernie Wrightson Inker: Bernie Wrightson Colorist: Tom Smith Letterer: Robbie Robbins Grade: 8 Detective Lieutenant Lloyd Klimpt finds himself stuck on a strange case. He needs help from The Ghoul, a monstrous investigator, and what he gets involved with is more than he bargained for.
I wasn't sure about this comic, but once the initial shock of the introduction for Klimpt wore off and the actual story got going, I really enjoyed it. It's a self-contained read (made up of three issues), but it pleasantly leaves us knowing there's more story that could be had, both before and after this arc. The actress case turns out to be very strange indeed, with resolution without answers. I felt a little disappointed that there was no way to hold and question the actresses, but I enjoyed that the Ghoul was worried and had trouble fighting them.
The art is very pulp horror, which works well for the Ghoul and all the demons and undead. The black and white art lends itself to that as well, and keeps tone appropriately harsh. I love the lightheartedness regarding getting Klimpt a bigger gun, and I really like seeing him get into the groove of using it. I also smirked with pleasure when he turned the tables with his standard issue at the end. Well done. I like how the Ghoul is both crass and kind at the same time. He has a sense of humor, but sometimes it's difficult to interpret it as humor because he's so imposing. I thought it was quite clever to have the Ghoul ride in the back of a U-haul to get around. I enjoyed the mysterious young boy genius that helps them get through the demonic barrier; I'm curious about him, but he's definitely less engaging in his mystery than the Ghoul. I appreciated that they didn't just slaughter all the demons, even after getting the information they needed. While I understand the Ghoul making that deal, I felt certain that Klimpt would have at least questioned that decision.
This is a comic I enjoyed reading. I would like to read more stories involving the Ghoul, especially if teamed up again with Klimpt.
