This story paints the same picture of Christian Dior, but does it from the outside looking in. Girl in Dior is a great slice-of-life about a fictional newspaper writer who finds her way into the front row of the fashion industry as a Dior model.
Not only is the story wonderful, the art in Girl in Dior is absolutely beautiful, too. It originally came out in France in 2013, and was titled Jeune Fille en Dior. The whole thing reminds me of what all of the fashion designer sketches I have ever seen look like.
While the actual story is fictional, the happenings and some of the characters are real. The graphic novel is a fashion history lesson, and when you make it to the appendices in the back, it explains in detail Christian Dior's life, and the lives of his entourage. Annie Goetzinger must have had a lot of fun doing the research for this book.
The only confusing part to me is the forward, which, while written by a well-known author, purposely makes a point of having nothing to do with the book and feels like something the author of the forward threw together at last minute with too much on her plate. Maybe it made more sense in French, who knows.
Girl in Dior is a beautiful view into the fashion world and would look on any coffee table as a glimpse into what could be. Highly recommended!
