Seamus is given an egg, which forms a strange and terrifying bond with him. This is the eighth book in The Nightmare Club series.

The story stars off simply enough with an egg that keep appearing on the boy's nightstand ... even after it's been smashed down the drain by his mother. It's creepy, but it's not doing anything that makes it or this story stand out ... until the twist. I was expecting the "hatching" aspect to produce a creature of some kind. In a way, I guess it did, but it's definitely not what I expected. However, it's not the hatching itself that's the truly frightening part; rather, it's what Seamus reveals after his story is over. It's very scary what's happened to his mind and body. Interestingly, this book contains one final page after that revelation that lightens the mood immediately (and made me smile). The other unusual thing about this story is the random tangent about a hedgehog in the middle of the story; there were three pages on it! Why was so much time spent on the tangent?

This is an unusual story. It's not overly interesting at first glance, but it has a nice build and a scary ending. The art works well with this story, as it's rather simple -- just a boy and an egg. It captures his growing fear, but not his madness. I really like how the couple all-black pages are used to emphasize the text on them. If you've enjoyed others from this series, make sure to get this one.
