ISBN: 9781421578699 Grade: 9 We learn a bit about the Hiragi family, vampire culture, Guren's plans for Yuichiro, what happened to Shinoa's sister, and how cursed weapons work. It could have been a big exposition dump, but then we learn all these things mostly organically, and in an engaging, entertaining, riveting way, with clarity. There's also plenty of action still, thanks to tests and training.
I appreciate that there's plenty of downtime, though, affording is a chance to get to know the characters better as the get to know each other, with some really great interactions. I'm happy that we got some more words from quiet and cranky Kimizuki in the last chapter. I currently have a love / hate thing going on with Guren -- as does Yu, I think. As much new information as we got, I'm actually more curious than ever about some things!
And with two previous volumes I've gotten to read, I really love the art! The cell-shading of bonus mini-poster almost makes me wish the whole thing was in colour, but the nigh-contrast black-and white is beautiful too, clean, well-laid-out, and easy to read.
Bring on the next volume!
