ISBN: 9781421571591 Grade: 6 In Terra Formars volume six, the scattered Earth squads are once again back to fighting the Terraformars bug creatures.
Now let us face it: they've been doing this for about four volumes straight, and each volume is beginning to feel exactly the same as all the other ones. With each volume, the author gives some minimal back story on why each of the humans chose to go with the operation that mixed their DNA, but otherwise nothing is ever really told about them. This is a fight based manga like Yu-Gi-Oh! or DragonBallZ; however, it is obvious that there is a bit of a deeper story behind it that never seems like it is getting a chance to be told.
The art is fun; the bug guys' fights are always entertaining. However, six volumes in, it feels like the story is in so much of a hurry to show another fight scene that it is missing its whole point of existence: to tell a story. What is going on between the separate battles between the humans and the Terraformars? What is being done to get them off Mars? Why are the Earth scientists so shady?
Fortunately, this volume did divulge a little bit of why some of the Terraformars may act like they do, with the revelation that missing Earth exploration devices were being stored in mysterious pyramids. Maybe there will be more information in future volumes.
Volume six may be a make it or break it volume for its readers. It is starting to feel like you are buying the same book with a different cover and a two month wait.
