Sio Ogura is a Japanese high school student and a military geek. While on a trip to Taiwan, it comes under attack by aliens. When Sio encounters a supersoldier named Jack, she suddenly finds herself transformed into a super soldier herself, wielding an enormous cannon / machine gun attached to her arm. She learns she is an e-gene holder, a person who is a reincarnation of a historical figure, who comes equipped with heavy duty weaponry. They are organized by DOGOO, an international organization dedicated to repelling an alien invasion of Earth.

I wasn't impressed with the first episode, figuring it to be just an anime about a tiny girl with a big gun. But I changed my tune with each additional episode. I did like Sio's enthusiasm and knowledge for all things military, and I liked how she earned the respect of her fellow e-gene holders by just being herself. The fact that Sio was a young girl was never an issue to anyone; she was considered just as capable as anyone, despite being a newbie.

While I thought the premise of the skills of historical figures (Jack the Ripper, Geronimo, Galilio) was a bit gimmicky, at least it was a plausible enough premise and allowed for a variety of personalities that kept things from being too dull or too focused on just Nobunagun. The plot was straightforward and compelling enough to make each episode worth watching, and I rarely felt there was a wasted moment in the 13 episodes I saw.

A nice little series with a moderately engaging premise, and a fairly good cast of characters and a well-paced mix of battles and more character-based stuff. Not the most revolutionary of anime, but a solid effort that I can recommend to anyone.
