Credits ISBN: 9781561639946 Creators: Margreet de Heer Grade: 8 Religion: A Discovery in Comics starts out with the author talking about her idea about doing a book about religion, and is filled with self-doubt about tackling such a broad topic. Later, she describes her personal experiences growing up in the Dutch Reformed Church, her rebellion against it, and her constant search for meaning in religion. Along the way we get a condensed but still informational summary about the world religions: Islam, Judaism, Christianity, Hinduism and Buddhism.
As an athiest, I appreciated the information about all the religions and was a bit surprised that de Heer talks about atheism and agnosticism. I did have mixed feelings about her take on the status of women in all the different faiths and assigning something of a score to how women-friendly they are. She does point out that the religions do have tenets that women are equal.
I also found interesting that de Heer currently considers herself an agnostic, although she strongly emphasizes throughout the book that religion is personal; there should always be a search for religious truth.
A very informative and colorful book, but a bit on the muddled side as far as the purpose of the book in the first place.
