Nate gets attacked by strange creatures. He kills them in self-defense and gets recruited to Mythic Lore Services. Scene change to Yosemite, where MLS is trying to sold a magic-caused drought. They also explain more of what they do (and what's causing the drought) to the local scientist and law enforcement (and thus, us, the readers).

I opened this comic and was instantly drawn in. What the heck is going on with that weird woman? And -- oh my god (cue squirming from the ick) -- what is wrong with the hair coming out of her chin? Then, there are monsters. Deadly, creepy monsters. Nate has some wicked movie martial arts moves that I wasn't expecting. His ability to fight back so well is the obvious reason he was recruited, but there's obviously more to it than that. Including what makes him worth targeting by the monsters?

I like Cass. She seems like a wild card, but one who uses the truth to mess with people. Her being a prophet is even better, and goes with her speaking her mind so effortlessly. I love her eye, but I wonder if it was just a visual effect or if it's real (and why she wears her sunglasses). I like her attitude, even though it could be interpreted as a bit mean to humans who believe in science rather than the magical truth. Watterson seems like a grunt until the end of this issue when we meet his "other half". I'm not sure what kind of creature they summoned or how or why, but I definitely want to find out! The visual is excellent -- scary in all the right ways while still being a bit cartoony.

I like the art. It's realistic with a hint of cartoony, and the subdued and dark color palette keeps it grounded. I love the logo and slogan on the back, too. The preview for issue #2 is in black and white, but it's no less grabbing. I'm definitely hooked by the potential and possibilities of this story.
